Bike background / history:
This was my first road bike, I’ve owned it since mid 2014 and it’s been brilliant.
It was my primary road bike for several years before becoming my N+1 training/commuting bike. I’ve just bought another road bike, so it’s time for this BMC to find a new home.
The original owner purchased it from Evans Cycles under the cycle to work scheme, and owned it for about 3 years before selling it to me. It was still in its stock/factory configuration when I received it, and I’ve upgraded a number of components over the years, including the shifters and wheels.
While not a featherweight, this bike is light given the alloy frame and finishing kit. With lighter wheels, handbars, and seat post, it could get below 8 kg.
I could barely ride 50km when I first bought this bike, and it’s helped me develop a passion for the sport, and build significant fitness and endurance. This bike has carried me on many +100km rides, my first (and second, and third) 100-mile rides, several triathlons, and more recently my first 200km ride. In its exact current configuration, I’ve ridden a sub-3-hour 100km ride, and nearly broke the 5-hour barrier on a 100-mile ride. It’s certainly no slouch.
The frame has race geometry, and BMC’s hydro-formed aluminium build process makes the frame nice and stiff. The top tube has a T-shaped profile for excellent rigidity, and the seat stays are low for a better aero profile. The seat tube is oversize 31.8mm, and very rigid. The forks are carbon, and add some compliance to the ride. The frame is designed for 23mm tyres, but will just about accept 25mm rubber. With 25mm tyres, this bike can be reasonably comfortable.
In 2015 I upgraded the shifters from the stock Shimano 105 5600 to the newer Shimano 105 5700 series. This brought smoother shifting, and put the brake cables hidden under the bar tape for a more modern and aero look. I also switched the saddle for a wider model from ThirtyOne.
I’ve tried to maintain the bike well. Over the years I’ve replaced essential components as they’ve worn out, including the chain rings (2016), cassette (2015 and 2017), chain (same times as cassettes), cable inners and outers (2017), bottom bracket (2016), and jockey wheels (2016).
I purchased the wheels new in 2017. They are hand-build Italian rims, with a semi-aero rim depth. The rim profile isn’t as aero as modern rim designs, but I noticed an improvement compared to lower-profile rims. The freewheel isn’t too loud, with a polite buzz while coasting. These wheels are quite heavy, and an obvious thing to upgrade if you want to lose some grams, or ride a lot of hills. They’ve suited my riding just fine.
The photos show the bike with 25mm Continental Grand Prix 4000S II tyres (with reflective sidewalls), however these are not included in the sale. The bike will be sold with used Continental Gatorskin Ultra 23mm tyres.
I can leave the GP4000S II tyres on for an extra £25.
Also not included in the sale are the Crud Roadracer Mrk3 mudguards shown in the last photo. I can throw these in to the sale for an extra £10.
These are excellent mudguards, and I use them to keep my mates (and my feet and bum) drier during group rides in our excellent British weather. They mount to the frame with velcro pads, and are super-quick to fit and remove.
Condition:
This bike has been well used.
It was in full working order when I last used it, and I’ve given it a clean and relubrication ready for sale.
However, do not expect an immaculate bike, as it bears the evidence of being enthusiastically ridden for several years. I’ve tried to capture the condition in the photos.
The frame has numerous marks and abrasions from everyday use. There are 5 chips on the top tube from being transported on a bike rack to sportives and triathlons. The aluminium is exposed, but this is only cosmetic. The seat stays and seat tube are covered in small marks. There is cable rub on the head tube. The forks have a couple of small paint chips (purely cosmetic). The chain stays have some marks, although the drive-side stay has a translucent protector strip fitted that’s helped minimise paint chips from chain slap.
The seat post has some marks from light mounts, a saddle bag, and general maintenance. The cranks have shoe rub and other marks. The shifter hoods are marked in a few places, but are untorn. The shifter levers have scrapes on them. The front derailleur has some discoloration and the 105 sticker is peeling, and there is a small fracture in part of the chain guide (does not affect shifting). The rear derailleur has scrapes and marks on it. The tyres are well worn, with many small flint marks.
The wheels are in good condition. They roll well, and run true. The brake track has some scoring, but has plenty of life left.
I’ve tried to be as thorough as I can.
Although it’s getting on a bit cosmetically, I think it’s sound mechanically.
I’ve ridden 6 times in May 2019 (mostly commuting to work), for a total distance of 211km, so it’s certainly in working and rideable condition.
I’d expect that the bottom bracket and the headset bearings will need replacing in the next 1000km or so. The brake pads are also getting thin/worn, and would benefit from replacement. The lower headset bearings sound a little bumpy, so perhaps a bit sooner. They’re sealed cartridge bearings, so straightforward to do.
