Produced using advanced high modulus (HM) Ballistec carbon construction married with hand-picked race ready components from the likes of SRAM and FSA the Racing edition was designed to be an off-the-peg race machine. Carbon tubular wheels and pro-shape bars are a few of the features that make this bike ready to race.Designed as the perfect all-round tool for road racing, the EVO was developed to balance the most important factors in cycling engineering:  Weight, Stiffness and Aerodynamics. As Cannondale often do however, they have taken things in a slightly different direction, preferring to focus on the performance and handling of the bike over the course of an event or stage race. This is evident from the traditional tubing shapes and the relatively muted appearance of the EVO – whilst many companies are using ‘aero’ tubing to reduce drag, or squared tubing for stiffness Cannondale maintain that these tube shapes are unnecessary and not versatile enough to be fast over a whole race. There are potential problems with all three tubing shapes; Aero tubing is not particularly laterally stiff and can be uncomfortable, a squared profile offers excellent stiffness but presents a large surface area to the wind making it less efficient through the air, the traditional round tube sits between the two offering reasonable stiffness and aerodynamics whilst remaining comfortable.By choosing a circular tube profile Cannondale turned their attention to materials and manufacturing to maximise the compromise. Cannondale use high impact, high strength resins designed to withstand large numbers of deformations and by combining fibres very particularly have maximised the directional qualities of the carbon. This basic structure is then augmented with the addition of extremely light and very stiff High Modulus carbon. By adding to a strong matrix they do not have to over-build for strength as others might (Hi-modulus carbon is brittle), as such Cannondale have constructed the round tubes of the EVO to better the lateral stiffness of a squared tube whilst still maintaining the aero advantages of a circular tube and with considerable weight savings: a 56cm EVO frame weighs just 695g. Cannondale call this high strength carbon construction method Ballistec Carbon and the Evo HM is the lightest production frame in the world. Low weight is nothing without stiffness however and with Cannondale’s Press-fit BB30 bottom bracket maintaining it’s unrivalled stiffness even with the substantial weight savings, Cannondale have produced a frame with the highest stiffness-to-weight figures independently tested – 142.3 Nm/deg/kg and to put this into perspective the stiffness to weight ratio of the brilliant Giant TCR Advanced SL is 97Nm/Kg. There should be no concern over strength either, the EVO outperforms even most Aluminium frames in destructive and fatigue tests. The aerodynamics have been enhanced by decreasing the frontal area of the head tube and other key wind-facing areas. Compared to the majority of competitors’ bikes, the Evo headtube is 11% smaller as well as having 15% thinner fork blades and a 20% narrower downtube. Cannondale have also narrowed the top tube in the middle to encourage a ‘knees-in’ riding position as the rider makes up around 80% of the total drag when cycling. The Evo shape itself produces only 14g more drag than the best Aero frames on the market but without the added weight or harshness. You might think that a frame with such stiffness would be a fairly unforgiving ride. Not so. Cannondale have incorporated some of the SAVE features as seen on the Flash Hard-tail mountain bikes and the Synapse road series into the rear end of the bike in the form of SPEED SAVE, the chain stays for instance are exceptionally flat and wide which means that they will flex vertically whilst still being exceptionally rigid under power. The SPEED SAVE features whilst dampening the road, also make the bike faster when seated as it glides over all surfaces with a sublime smoothness. When you come to a hill and really stand on the pedals the opposite is true, the light weight and stiffness push you up with satisfying ease whilst the SAVE features work to keep the tyre in traction on rougher surfaces. The overall ride quality of SuperSix EVO is something that is immediately recognisable. From the first pedal stroke you notice just how responsive the bike is, it feels like it wants to go without you having to put too much effort in – but never in a way that makes you feel that you might be out of your depth. Poise is the word. At the same time it feels remarkably refined – a super-smooth ride feel that allows you to concentrate on the road or focus on your race tactics rather than worry about what your machine might be doing underneath you. It handles like a dream, the front end is sharp but controlled while the rear of the bike tracks beautifully, sling-shotting you out of the corners and launching you up the inclines. The Evo Hi Mod Red Racing Edition is equipped with Vision TC24 Carbon Tubular wheels. Sram Red Shifting componentry works in harmony with the world’s lightest and stiffest crankset – the Cannondale Hollowgram SISL2 with Press-fit BB30 bearings from FSA.
