For sale is a classic 80’s road race bike. The brand is Viking, but the frame was resprayed in 2000 and the branding was lost. Originally an off-white, it is now a lovely golden yellow with red reflective tape.
23 inch / 58.5 cm frame (centre to top). If you are not sure of frame sizing, I am just under 6 foot (1.8m) and the images show the bike as set up for me. Please make sure the frame is the right size for you – no returns!Tange Infinity Japanese double-butted Cr-Mo steel tubing. If you don’t know Tange tubing, this has similar properties to Reynolds 531. The frame has some light scratches and the usual paint chips around the dropouts, but no rusting.Shimano 105 6-speed indexed gears, down-tube shifters. Shimano 105 headset, front mech, bottom bracket and chainset. The rear mech was damaged and so was replaced with a Shimano RX100. Shimano 105 single-caliper brakes. The original brake levers were updated to more recent Shimano 105 levers with internal brake cable routing. If you want to use this bike for something like L’Eroica you will need to change the levers back (sorry I don’t have them anymore). Shimano 105 hubs and UKAI (Japanese-made) alloy rims with stainless steel double-butted spokes. The rear hub has a 6-speed BSA freewheel with 13-21 teeth. Original Shimano ‘Biopace’ 42-52 chainrings are fitted. Whatever anybody says about these, I could never tell any difference between these and circular chainrings. Forged dropouts (126mm rear dropout) with fine adjustment screws on rear dropouts. Continental Gatorskin 700x23c tyres. Technomic alloy stem and alloy handlebars. Flite saddle with titanium rails.
From my point of view, I love this bike – it is a FAST bike – but I just haven’t ridden it in a couple of years. I always went faster on this bike than my other bikes, so much so that when I had a new bike I got the new frame built to the same exact measurements – then I ended up with another bike that was just as fast. Something about the geometry obviously just suited me. But, since getting the newer bike, I haven’t ridden this one much and hence the reason for selling it.
The bike was used for commuting for some years and although it has many miles under it’s belt it’s fully roadworthy and ready to roll, but it would benefit from some new tyres.
A Cateye Mity 3 computer is fitted and a Cateye rear light, both are fully working.
LOOK (delta/ARC cleat) pedals are fitted but these will be removed, unless specifically requested to be left on.
In theory it would be possible to cold-space the frame to take 130mm rear hubs and so upgrade the bike to modern 9 or 10-speed gearing with integrated shift/brake levers. this would make a great project and I was tempted to do this, but since I haven’t ridden it for a while and it would then be just like another of my bikes, I decided against it.
Please note that payment is by Paypal or I will accept cash on collection. Also I am not offering postage, this is for collection only but I will consider transporting the bike within a limited distance.
If you want more information or photos please feel free to contact me. The bike is accurately listed so no returns.Thank you for looking and sorry for my rambling. Happy bidding!
