Here we have an interesting culmination of parts which when assembled result in my vision of a late 80s, early 90s inspired cafe racer themed road bike.
The frame is old, it is steel and it measures in at 56.
While it adorns Campagnolo decals I can assure you it doesn’t posses such pedigree. I was drawn to frame, which I found in France due to its pleasing aesthetic and measurements, not the badly stuck on livery which looks to have been applied a fair while back as there is surface rust behind them. Either way, they’ve stayed.
The bike I originally built with a fixed gear as a commuter weapon while doing a stint in London however when leaving the smoke for good it found its way into the shed where some basic Campagnolo hardware and gears were added as I found myself entering local duathlons, sprints and Triathlons where it, rather surprisingly dragged me round and appeared to be surprisingly competitive.
The bike deliberately has a fairly nose down stance with the wheels being staggered. The rear is a HED.3 TT tri spoke 700 and the front I believe is also a HED.3 but a rather rare track 650 version. Upon finding the wheel it then lead to a long hunt far and wide to find a set of suitable fitting 650 forks which finally showed up in the form of the Isaac ones which fit and are period correct.
Apart from that its all pretty sensible. This is not a bike for the purest, nor for the concourse de elegance. It its a tatty albeit tough and relatively straight, interesting little ride. It would suit someone who fancies a change from the normal perfection associated with the majority of shiny new bikes, while also being quick and relatively practical it would also represent a great base for more tinkering and modifications. I built it to be used and abused as I like the patina, the stance and the tatty ‘cable tied’ together vibe. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and while I appreciate its not for everyone it is great fun and rides surprisingly well. It gets plenty of attention and offensive looks as it smokes more modern bikes with ease.
If it is your thing or if you have any questions please give me a shout.
Its just had a brand new chain, the tyres pumped up and a hoon round the block and all seems to be well. That said it could probably do with a good going over before it covers some serious distance.
Cash on collection from Mersea Island preferred. Will pack and post if you’re desperate.
