US Postal Trek 5500 – 1999/20 – 54cm – Outstanding
Time to pass on my beloved US Postal Trek 5500 onto a new custodian.
This is the ultimate coffee stop bike. It doesn’t matter what modern super bikes turn up, it will be this US Postal Trek that gets all the attention and always stimulates conversation.Bought new, by me, in early 2000 from Cookson Cycles (TREK dealer) in Whitefield, Manchester UK.In amazing time-warp condition, if you want one in your classic collection, or just want a piece of cycling history, you won’t be disappointed. I doubt you will find a better one.Iconic US Postal TREK 5500 as raced by Lance Armstrong and the US Postal team in 1999, including Lance Armstrong’s first of seven Tour de France victories (since wiped from cycling records).Whatever your take is on the back story, the bike was ahead of its time. The frame manufactured by TREK in OCLV carbon was the lightest production frame of its day. It was also the first Tour victory for Shimano, using the equally superb Dura-Ace 7700 group set. Considered by many to be the most beautiful group set ever crafted (Campag lovers wouldn’t agree obviously !)This frame is the updated model with the 1” Ahead-set, replacing the old quill system… another first. The bike was lightly used in its early years, always impeccably cleaned and maintained throughout.Never crashed, no cracks or damage to the frame or components. It has spent the last few years in pride of place on the wall of my garage/workshop, occasionally coming down for a spin, but only in good weather. It remains a quick and rewarding bike to ride.It has the odd stone chip and scratch on the paintwork, wear on the crank arms and a few scratches on the shifters, but is overall in outstanding condition for its age. Please take time to appreciate the condition in the high res pictures. If you are interested and want more pictures, of any particular area, message me and I will gladly oblige. The Trek comes with the full and complete Shimano Dura-Ace 7700 groupset, all in amazing condition. There is the obligatory wear on the crank arms and scratches on the shift levers and rear derailleur body (I am being transparent, see photographs) and some very minor corrosion on the plating of the chain rings. The bike even has the rare Shimano Dura-Ace / Easton seat post. The bike comes fitted with a Sora 9 speed derailleur and 11-30 cassette as shown in the pictures.I put these on to preserve the precious Dura-Ace derailleur and cassette which will also come with the bike. All work perfectly. The Trek will come with two pairs of wheels.A pair of amazing Shimano WH6500 period wheels, shod with super quick, up to date Continental GP5000 tyres. The wheels are straight and true, hubs just serviced and very little wear on the brake tracks. They are a work-of-art with amazing polished machined hubs and unique minimalist spokes. The tyres are virtually new, only done one 20 mile ride.andA pair Mavic Open-Pro rims laced to the perfect Shimano Dura-Ace hubs with stainless spokes.Shod with Continental Ultra Sport tyres. Rims and tyres in good condition,
Both sets of wheels have Shimano Dura-Ace 12-27 cassettes with minimal wear.
Deda handlebar, with recent Cinelli tape in blue matching how US Postal ran in 1999, on a striking 3T Alien stem. The bike comes with a fully working Shimano Dura-ace Flight-Deck computer which operates from buttons built into the shift hoods. As well as the usual data tt indicates gear selection, ratio and interpolates cadence in the display, probably a first in 1999.
US Postal special edition Selle San Marco saddle, in good condition completes the picture for show, but a more comfortable Giant Flite SL saddle is included which is more appropriate for riding.
Please appreciate the condition on the detailed photographs, more available on request.
Viewing welcome; and highly recommended.
The description and photographs are honest and transparent, but would prefer viewing and collection in person to rule out any difference in expectation and all risk in shipping.I will reluctantly ship unseen, using the buyers arranged shipper, but entirely at the buyers risk.I do not offer returns, I would prefer inspection and collection.
This bike is beautiful and still rides really well even by modern standards. But the engineering and finish is next level in my opinion compared to today’s bikes. I like my new state of the art bikes, but they don’t build em like this anymore.
I have a US Postal jersey (Medium) and period US Postal stars and stripes Giro helmet available separately if required.
This is the ultimate coffee stop bike. It doesn’t matter what modern super bikes turn up, it will be this Trek that gets all the attention and always stimulates conversation.
I am only parting with the bike as regrettably my ageing body is no longer comfortable on a race bike.It is priced to sell, at a fair figure given the condition and collectability. I do not have to part with this bike, it is just ready for someone else to appreciate it.
Please don’t make any silly offers, they will be politely refused and it will remain in my collection.
Please ensure you check the listing and the detailed photographs of the Trek, to ensure you appreciate the excellent condition and compatibility with your requirements before you purchase.
I am a private seller (with 100% feedback), and do not offer returns.
